Colorado State Predicts Below-Average 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season
US · Published Jun 12, 2026
Colorado State University (CSU) has updated its 2026 Atlantic hurricane season forecast, predicting a quieter-than-average season.
The revised outlook now anticipates 11 named storms, 5 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes, down from the initial April forecast of 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes.

Why It's Important?

The reduced hurricane activity forecast for 2026 suggests a lower likelihood of significant storm impacts across the Atlantic basin. However, the probabilities of landfalling hurricanes, while below historical averages, still pose risks to coastal regions, particularly in the Caribbean, Gulf Coast, and U.S. East Coast. Residents in these areas should remain vigilant, as even a single storm can cause severe damage. The presence of El Niño, while reducing overall activity, does not eliminate the possibility of impactful storms. Preparedness remains critical to mitigate risks associated with potential hurricanes.
