The extreme heat had widespread impacts on daily life, with nearly half of Americans reporting higher electricity bills due to increased air-conditioning use. Around 40% said the heat disrupted travel plans, and two-thirds reported changes to outdoor family activities. Rising nighttime temperatures, which broke records by 0.7°F, posed additional health risks by preventing the body from recovering from daytime heat. The heat also coincided with widespread wildfires in the Pacific Northwest and Canada, with smoke affecting large parts of North America. Scientists link these conditions to the continued burning of fossil fuels, which exacerbates climate change.
