The US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a warning for a significant and dangerous heat wave expected to impact the Central and Eastern United States from June 29 through July 3,
This heat wave is anticipated to bring extreme temperatures, posing risks of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. To help residents prepare, the NWS has developed the HeatRisk online tool, which provides a seven-day forecast and categorizes heat risks using a color-coded system. The tool allows users to input their location to view specific heat risk levels and recommended precautions.

Impact & Risks

The heat wave is expected to affect a large portion of the US population, with the most vulnerable groups being older adults, children, outdoor workers, and individuals on certain medications. The NWS HeatRisk tool identifies five risk categories, ranging from 'little to no risk' (light green) to 'extreme risk' (magenta). Extreme heat can lead to severe health complications, including heat stroke and even fatalities, particularly for those without access to cooling or hydration. Health systems, industries, and infrastructure may also face significant strain during this period.
