Global El Niño Event Likely to Develop by Summer 2026, UN Warns

The United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) have issued a warning about the likely emergence of El Niño conditions in the coming months.
According to the WMO, there is an 80% chance of El Niño forming between June and August 2026, with a 90% likelihood by November.
This weather phenomenon, characterized by warming sea-surface temperatures in the central-eastern Pacific, is expected to influence global temperatures and rainfall patterns.

Why It's Important?

The impacts of El Niño are expected to be widespread, affecting regions across the globe. In the United States, wetter conditions are anticipated in the southern states, while drier conditions may prevail in parts of the north. Globally, areas such as southern South America, the Horn of Africa, and central Asia could experience increased rainfall, while Central America, northern South America, and Australia may face drier conditions. The phenomenon could also suppress Atlantic hurricane activity while increasing cyclone potential in the Pacific. These changes pose risks to agriculture, water resources, and disaster preparedness efforts.
