Tips to Tick-Proof Your Yard: Consumer Reports Recommendations
US · Published May 15, 2026
Consumer Reports has highlighted the growing concern of ticks and the illnesses they carry, emphasizing that backyards can be a significant habitat for these pests.
According to Paul Hope from Consumer Reports, ticks thrive in damp, shaded areas and under tall grass.
To make your yard less inviting to ticks, it is recommended to keep grass trimmed to about 3 inches, clear away piles of leaves and debris, and trim tall grasses and weeds, especially near walkways and play areas.

Why It's Important?

Ticks pose a health risk as they can carry diseases such as Lyme disease. Homeowners with shaded, damp yards or properties near wooded areas are particularly at risk. Children and pets playing in grassy or overgrown areas may also face increased exposure. Without proper yard maintenance, ticks can thrive, increasing the likelihood of bites and potential illness. Additionally, cleaning up tick-prone areas can inadvertently expose individuals to ticks, making personal protection essential during yard work.
