Study Links South Asian Monsoon to Hemispheric Climate Drivers

A global team of scientists has resolved a long-standing paradox in the South Asian summer monsoon system, which delivers rainfall across the Indian subcontinent and drives upwelling in the Arabian Sea.
The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that monsoon rainfall and ocean upwelling are influenced by different hemispheric solar forcing mechanisms.

Impact & Risks

The findings highlight significant risks to marine ecosystems and fisheries in the Arabian Sea due to reduced upwelling caused by Southern Hemisphere warming. This could lead to decreased marine productivity, threatening food security and livelihoods in the region. The study also raises concerns about the potential unintended consequences of climate intervention strategies, such as solar radiation management, which may disrupt the delicate balance of the monsoon system and its associated ocean processes.
