Study Reveals Tripling of Compound Heatwaves in USA and Central Europe

A recent study published in Nature highlights a significant increase in atmospheric–riverine compound heatwaves across 796 river basins in the USA and Central Europe. These events, which involve simultaneous atmospheric and riverine heatwaves, have tripled in frequency since the 1980s. Researchers found that compound heatwaves now occur approximately three times more often than they did four decades ago, with riverine heatwaves showing a 114% increase in frequency, a 148% rise in duration, and a 95% boost in intensity. The findings are based on a combination of water quality observations and deep learning models, which analyzed data from 1981 to 2019.

Impact & Risks

The study underscores the growing risks posed by compound heatwaves, which exacerbate environmental and ecological stress. Compared to isolated riverine heatwaves, these compound events lead to a 16% increase in water temperature and a 2.9% decline in dissolved oxygen levels, threatening aquatic ecosystems and water quality. The intensification of these events could have severe implications for biodiversity, water resources, and human health, particularly in regions already vulnerable to climate extremes.
