Compared to isolated riverine heatwaves, these compound events lead to a 16% increase in water temperature and a 2.9% decline in dissolved oxygen levels, threatening aquatic ecosystems and water quality. The intensification of these events could have severe implications for biodiversity, water resources, and human health, particularly in regions already vulnerable to climate extremes. The findings highlight the urgent need for mitigation strategies to address the compounded effects of atmospheric and riverine heatwaves.
