Southwest Monsoon Withdrawal Progresses Across India

• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that conditions are becoming favourable for the further withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from additional parts of eastern India, the Northern Peninsula, and many areas in northeast India over the next 3-4 days. Heavy rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours in Uttarakhand, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, and East Uttar Pradesh, with amounts ranging from 7-11 cm. The monsoon has already withdrawn from the remaining parts of Maharashtra, parts of Goa, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh as of 8th October
• The current withdrawal line passes through Supaul, Ranchi, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Bijapur, Hyderabad, Belagavi, Panjim, and 15°N/72°E.

Impact & Risks

The withdrawal of the monsoon is expected to bring drier conditions to the affected regions, potentially impacting agricultural activities reliant on rainfall. However, isolated heavy rainfall is still likely in Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, South Interior Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the next few days. This could lead to localised flooding in low-lying areas and disruptions to daily life in these regions.
