Uttar Pradesh Records Deficient Rainfall During SW Monsoon 2026
IN · Published Aug 25, 2026
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported significant rainfall deficits across Uttar Pradesh during the ongoing southwest monsoon season of
From 1 June to 28 July 2026, the state recorded an average cumulative rainfall of 250.2 mm, which is 25% below the normal of 333.5 mm. Daily rainfall on 28 July 2026 also showed widespread deficits, with several districts such as Ayodhya, Auraiya, and Maharajganj recording no rainfall at all. However, some areas like Bijnor and Kannauj experienced above-normal rainfall on the same day, with Bijnor recording a 287% surplus. The data highlights a stark contrast in rainfall distribution across the state, with eastern Uttar Pradesh showing a more pronounced deficit compared to the western region.

Impact & Risks

The rainfall deficit is likely to impact agricultural activities, particularly in rain-fed areas of Uttar Pradesh. Crops such as paddy, maize, and pulses, which rely heavily on monsoon rains, may face stress due to insufficient water availability. Districts like Ayodhya, Amethi, and Kushinagar, which recorded deficits exceeding 60%, are at higher risk of reduced agricultural yields. Additionally, the uneven distribution of rainfall could lead to localised water scarcity in some areas while others may experience temporary waterlogging due to isolated heavy rains.
