The ongoing drought in Virginia has far-reaching consequences, particularly for agriculture, water availability, and wildfire risks. Rapid-onset 'flash droughts' have caused significant economic impacts, especially in the agricultural sector, and have led to water supply concerns for municipalities. The 2023 drought, for instance, was a key factor in major wildfires like the Matts Creek Fire in the Jefferson National Forest. Additionally, 15 localities in Virginia qualified for USDA emergency loans due to severe (D2) to extreme (D3) drought conditions. These challenges highlight the vulnerability of both natural and managed landscapes to prolonged dry spells.
