Deep Depression Brings Heavy Rain to Eastern India, Cyclone Arnab Name Unused
• A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal made landfall between Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and Gopalpur, Odisha, during the night of 23–24 September
• The system brought heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the region but did not intensify into a cyclonic storm, leaving the name 'Arnab' unused. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported sustained winds of 55–65 km/h with gusts up to 75 km/h. Rainfall warnings were issued for Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar, with orange alerts in districts like Nuaparha, Kandhamal, and Kalahandi. The system is expected to weaken gradually as it moves inland.
Impact & Risks
The heavy rainfall and strong winds have caused disruptions in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, with risks of localised flooding and landslides. Authorities in Odisha evacuated 1,500 residents from Gajapati district and placed 380 emergency teams on alert. Schools and Anganwadi centres in several districts were closed, and ferry services across Chilika Lake were suspended. Vulnerable areas face heightened risks, particularly in low-lying regions.
