26 Wards in Visakhapatnam Identified as Highly Flood-Prone: IIT Study
IN · Published Sep 17, 2026
A study conducted by researchers from IIT-BHU has classified 26 wards in Visakhapatnam as having very high flood vulnerability, with an additional 38 wards falling under the high-risk category.
The study used Geographic Information System (GIS) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) techniques to assess flood risks based on factors such as elevation, slope, drainage density, and proximity to water bodies.

Impact & Risks

The identified wards in Visakhapatnam face significant risks of flooding, which could lead to property damage, displacement, and potential loss of life. The high vulnerability is attributed to factors like low elevation, poor drainage, and proximity to rivers and the sea. Without immediate intervention, these areas remain at risk of severe impacts during heavy rainfall or extreme weather events.
