Ticks and Mosquitoes Return to Vermont: Protect Your Pets This Spring
US · Published May 28, 2026
As spring unfolds in Vermont, ticks and mosquitoes are making their seasonal return, posing risks to both pets and humans.
According to the Vermont Veterinary Medical Association, blacklegged ticks, also known as deer ticks, can transmit Lyme disease and at least five other illnesses, though only Lyme disease has a vaccine available.
These ticks are particularly small, making them hard to detect, especially on dark fur.

Why It's Important?

Ticks and mosquitoes can carry diseases that are harmful to pets, livestock, and humans. Lyme disease, transmitted by blacklegged ticks, is a significant concern, as are mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile virus and heartworm. Pets are particularly vulnerable, with ticks being difficult to spot on their fur and mosquito bites potentially leading to severe health issues. Livestock owners also face risks, as larger animals require specific preventative measures. Without proper precautions, these pests can lead to serious health complications for animals and humans alike.
