Above-Average Summer Temperatures Expected Across Washington
US · Published May 28, 2026
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released a new temperature outlook predicting a significantly warmer-than-average summer for Washington state.
The Pacific Northwest is expected to experience some of the highest temperature departures from normal in the country, with the heat peaking during June, July, and August.
Historically, summer temperatures in the Seattle-Tacoma area average in the 70s°F (21-26°C), while Spokane typically sees highs in the 80s°F (27-32°C).

Why It's Important?

The anticipated heat wave could have widespread impacts on residents, particularly given that only 53% of Washington households have air conditioning, according to a 2020 U.S. Energy Information Administration survey. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions, may face heightened risks of heat-related illnesses. Additionally, the elevated temperatures could exacerbate drought conditions and increase the likelihood of wildfires, posing threats to both public safety and natural ecosystems.
