Washington, D.C. Announces Start of 2026-2027 Leaf Collection Season
US · Published Oct 23, 2026
• Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Department of Public Works (DPW) have announced that Washington, D.C.'s annual leaf collection season will begin on November 2,
• The program aims to collect thousands of tons of leaves from residential streets across all eight wards, preventing clogged storm drains and supporting the city's sustainability goals. Residents are encouraged to rake leaves into tree boxes or curb lanes by the Sunday before their scheduled collection week. The DPW will provide at least two scheduled collections for each residential street and will notify residents of their collection schedule in advance. The city is also expanding its food waste composting program, with over 50 community-based bins available for residents to dispose of organic waste responsibly.

Impact & Risks

The leaf collection program helps keep streets clean, prevents flooding from clogged storm drains, and supports environmental sustainability by diverting organic waste from landfills. Residents who fail to follow the guidelines, such as using plastic bags for leaf disposal, risk having their leaves collected as trash instead of being composted. Additionally, delays in leaf collection may occur due to adverse weather conditions, such as snow or freezing rain, which could temporarily shift DPW resources to snow removal operations.
