Kerala has experienced a 23% deficit in monsoon rainfall so far this season, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Between 1 June and 24 August, the state received 1,278.7 mm of rainfall compared to the normal 1,671.4 mm.

Impact & Risks

The rainfall deficit could impact agricultural activities and water availability in Kerala, particularly in districts with higher deficits like Wayanad and Idukki. Farmers relying on monsoon rains for irrigation may face challenges, potentially affecting crop yields. Additionally, reduced rainfall could strain water resources, impacting drinking water supplies and hydroelectric power generation. Coastal areas and islands like Lakshadweep may also experience water shortages due to the deficit.
