India Faces Growing Threat from Himalayan Glacial Lake Outburst Floods

• The recent outburst of the Shintaphu glacial lake in Bhutan's Gasa district has highlighted the increasing threat of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in the Himalayan region.
• The sudden release of water from the lake caused severe flooding in the Mo and Sankosh river systems, prompting high flood alerts in northern West Bengal and Assam.

Impact & Risks

India is particularly vulnerable to GLOFs due to its unique geography and rapid development in the Himalayan region. A 2020 study found that 22% of glacial lakes in the Indian Himalayas pose high or very high hazard levels, threatening communities located hundreds of kilometres downstream. Historical data shows over 6,000 deaths in India from GLOFs between 1835 and 2025, the highest among Himalayan nations. Infrastructure such as dams, highways, and bridges in potential outburst zones amplifies the destruction caused by these floods. The environmental impact includes severe soil erosion, habitat destruction, and long-term changes to river courses, which disrupt local ecosystems and increase future flood risks.
