• The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued winter storm warnings for northwest and interior Alaska, with significant snowfall and strong winds expected. The south slopes of the Western Brooks Range and the Noatak Valley could see up to 20 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 55 mph. This warning is in effect until 4 p.m. local time on October
• A second warning covers the south slopes of the Central Brooks Range, including Coldfoot, Wiseman, and the Dalton Highway, where 8 to 16 inches of snow are forecast through Monday night. Blowing snow is expected to reduce visibility, and freezing rain may worsen conditions in some areas, such as the Upper Koyukuk Valley.

Impact & Risks

Remote villages and critical infrastructure, such as the Dalton Highway and Red Dog Mine, are expected to face significant challenges. Blowing snow and freezing rain could disrupt transportation, including flights to isolated communities, leaving them cut off from essential supplies. The storm's strong winds and heavy snowfall may also create hazardous driving conditions, particularly on the Dalton Highway, a key route to the North Slope oil fields. Residents in affected areas are advised to prepare for potential power outages and limited access to resources.
