The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that conditions are becoming favourable for the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from parts of West Rajasthan around 19th September
Additionally, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the Andaman Sea and its surrounding regions on the same date. Over the past 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall (≥ 21 cm) was recorded in Sikkim, while very heavy rainfall (12-20 cm) occurred in Jammu & Kashmir. Heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) was also observed in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Konkan, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Tripura, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu.

Impact & Risks

The withdrawal of the monsoon from West Rajasthan signals the transition to drier conditions in the region. However, the heavy rainfall recorded in several states has led to waterlogging and potential damage to crops and infrastructure. Farmers in affected areas may face challenges in managing standing crops, particularly in regions like Sikkim and Jammu & Kashmir, where rainfall was most intense. The formation of a low-pressure area over the Andaman Sea could bring further rainfall to nearby regions, posing risks of flooding and waterlogging.
