Wisconsin Sees Above-Normal Growing Degree Days
US · Published Sep 18, 2026
Wisconsin is experiencing above-normal growing degree day (GDD) accumulations for the 2026 growing season.
As of May 1, GDD values range from 2,760 in the far south and west to 1,900 in the far north, representing 110-115% of normal levels.

Impact & Risks

The above-normal GDD accumulation is beneficial for crop growth, but it also increases the risk of pest infestations, particularly cabbage aphids. These pests thrive in cooler temperatures and can quickly infest crops like Brussels sprouts, feeding on new growth and developing buds. If left unmanaged, this could lead to significant crop damage. Farmers are advised to monitor their fields closely and take preventive measures, such as using biological controls or insecticides, to mitigate the risk of pest outbreaks.
