Climate Change Drives 80% of U.S. Coastal Flood Days

A recent analysis by Climate Central reveals that human-caused climate change is responsible for approximately 80% of coastal flood days in the United States over the past decade (2016-2025).
Rising sea levels, driven by warming oceans and melting ice sheets, have significantly increased the frequency of high tide flooding, also known as nuisance or sunny day flooding.

Impact & Risks

Coastal flooding poses significant risks to communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems. Flooded homes and roads disrupt daily life, while water contamination and mold growth threaten public health. Coastal economies reliant on tourism, fisheries, and trade are particularly vulnerable, as are ecosystems like wetlands that provide natural protection. Hazardous facilities, including oil wells and sewage treatment plants, are increasingly at risk of flooding, which could lead to environmental contamination. Without rapid emissions cuts, sea levels are projected to rise by 10-12 inches along U.S. coasts by 2050, exacerbating flooding and its associated impacts.
