Atlantic Hurricane Season 2026 May Set Record for Quietest Year
US · Published Sep 9, 2026
Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) report that the Atlantic hurricane season of 2026 is on track to set records for inactivity.
As of September 8, 2026, no named hurricanes have formed, and if Hurricane Fay does not develop by September 11, this year will mark the latest date for a named hurricane in the Atlantic basin.

Impact & Risks

The lack of hurricane activity in the Atlantic is unusual but welcomed by coastal communities that typically face storm threats during this time of year. However, El Niño's influence may lead to extreme weather events in other regions, including flooding, ice storms, and snow in the southeastern United States during fall and winter. Additionally, higher dust concentrations from the Saharan Air Layer may impact air quality in areas such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. (Source: WXII)
