New York aims for 30% tree coverage
New York City is prioritizing the expansion of its urban tree canopy coverage as part of a comprehensive environmental justice initiative, aiming to reach 30% by 2024. Currently, Staten Island leads the city with 33.1% coverage, followed by the Bronx with 26.7%. This initiative is driven by the urgent need to mitigate the devastating effects of heat waves, which have been linked to a significant number of premature deaths in the city. In the past five years, an estimated 525 deaths were attributed to heat-related causes, underscoring the critical role of tree cover in cooling urban areas and improving air quality.
