Flooding and pollution disproportionately affect communities of color
Communities in Northeast Houston, predominantly communities of color, are facing severe flooding and toxic pollution, exacerbated by the climate crisis and neglected infrastructure. West Street Recovery, a local organization formed after Hurricane Harvey, is actively addressing these issues. Through organizing and research, they have highlighted the systemic inequalities that make their neighborhood more vulnerable to flooding. In 2023, their efforts led to a commitment from Houston to improve outdated drainage systems that contribute to worsening flooding conditions.
