A recent study by the University of Cambridge reveals that warming ocean water is advancing towards Antarctica, posing a significant threat to the continent's ice shelves. Researchers have directly observed the expansion of circumpolar deep water, a relatively warm water mass, towards the Antarctic continental shelf. This warm water can flow beneath ice shelves, accelerating their melting from below and weakening their structural integrity.
