Researchers observed trees in North Carolina emitting a faint electrical glow (corona discharge) during thunderstorms.
This is the first time corona discharge has been documented on trees outside of a laboratory setting.
The research provides insights into atmospheric electricity and could improve lightning prediction.
Trees glow electrically during thunderstorms, research shows
Researchers at Penn State University observed trees in North Carolina emitting a faint electrical glow, called corona discharge, during thunderstorms. This is the first observation of this phenomenon in nature, outside of a controlled laboratory setting. The team, led by William Brune and Patrick McFarland, used a modified van equipped with specialized instruments to document these events on sweetgum and loblolly pine trees.
