U.S. faces record-breaking drought conditions
The United States is facing a record-breaking drought, with over 61% of the contiguous states experiencing moderate to exceptional drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. The drought is particularly severe in the Southeast, where 97% of the area is affected, and in the West, where two-thirds are experiencing drought. NOAA reports that March saw the highest drought severity since records began in 1895. The lack of snow in the West, which typically provides water for the summer, exacerbates the situation. Additionally, a separate drought in the South, influenced by the jet stream, is compounding the issue.
