Study shows humidity significantly increases health risks during temperature extremes.
Climate change is expected to increase the frequency of dangerous temperature-humidity events.
Improved early warning systems and public health strategies are needed to address these risks.
Humidity worsens health risks from temperature extremes
A recent study in Scientific Reports shows humidity amplifies health risks when combined with extreme temperatures, especially with climate change. Data from 13 Chinese cities (2013-2019) revealed that high temperature and humidity together are more dangerous than temperature extremes alone. High humidity impairs the body's ability to regulate its temperature, reducing cooling in hot weather and increasing heat loss in cold weather.
