Michigan strengthens air quality communication due to smoke
Michigan is reinforcing its air quality risk communication system in response to the serious effects of smoke from Canadian forest fires. The state will now issue air quality alerts when fine particles or ozone levels reach the 'unhealthy for sensitive groups' range on the Federal Air Quality Index. Previously, alerts were only issued for 'unhealthy' levels, with advisories for the orange range. This change aims to improve residents' information on potential air quality issues. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is leading this initiative, with Senior Meteorologist Jim Haywood emphasizing the challenges of forecasting smoke conditions beyond 48 hours. The Environmental Protection Agency's AirNow website and other local monitoring networks are recommended for up-to-date air quality information.
