Idaho Farmers Brace for Challenging Water Season Amid Low Snowpack
US · Published Apr 17, 2026
Southern Idaho farmers face a challenging irrigation season due to low snowpack levels.
Consecutive dry years have depleted reservoirs, exacerbating the water shortage in the Treasure Valley.
Water conservation strategies and alternative water sources are being explored to mitigate the impact on Idaho's agricultural economy.
Low snowpack threatens Idaho agriculture irrigation season
Farmers in southern Idaho, especially in the Treasure Valley, are bracing for a tough irrigation season because of very low snowpack. Richard Durrant, a farmer in southwest Idaho, calls it one of the worst water years he's seen. The area's farming depends a lot on irrigation water from mountain snowpack that fills reservoirs like Lucky Peak, Arrowrock, and Anderson Ranch.
