Seasonal fires in Northern Thailand, especially around Chiang Mai, are causing significant air quality issues.
NASA satellite imagery shows a thick haze covering the region, primarily from agricultural and forest fires.
Residents are advised to take precautions against the smoke, while long-term solutions are needed to address the root causes.
Severe smoke pollution affects Northern Thailand air
The air quality in Northern Thailand, particularly around Chiang Mai, is severely affected by smoke from seasonal fires. NASA's Earth Observatory images from April 22, 2026, captured by the MODIS instrument on the Terra satellite, reveal a thick haze blanketing the region's valleys and ridges. These fires, commonly set for agricultural and forest management during the dry season, are exacerbated by unusually warm and dry conditions, increasing the risk of transboundary haze, according to the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC).
