April freeze causes widespread crop damage
A late freeze in April 2026 has caused widespread damage to specialty crops throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, impacting grape and fruit growers from New York to North Carolina. Boordy Vineyards in Baltimore County, Maryland, reported significant losses despite employing various mitigation strategies, such as applying potassium and copper, lighting fires, and using helicopters to mix the air. Pennsylvania fruit growers have also suffered heavy losses, prompting State Representative Dan Moul to propose a bill that would allow farmers to access funds from the Agriculture Rapid Response Disaster Readiness program for losses not covered by existing insurance or USDA programs.
