A recent study by the University of Alabama indicates that over 17 million people living along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States are at high risk of flooding. The study assessed 16 factors, including geographic hazards and population vulnerability, identifying 17.5 million people at 'very high' risk and another 17 million at 'high' risk.
