India Prepares for Potential El Nino with Agricultural Resilience
US · Published Apr 19, 2026
India is preparing for a potential El Nino event by enhancing its agricultural resilience.
The government is focusing on irrigation, climate-resilient seeds, and early-warning systems to minimize disruptions to the Kharif crop season.
Seed stocks have been secured above required levels, and emergency reserves are in place for replanting or crop switching.
Strengthening agriculture against El Nino impact
India is proactively preparing for a potential El Nino event by strengthening its agricultural sector's resilience. The government has invested heavily in improving irrigation infrastructure and is maintaining high reservoir levels to support farmers during periods of reduced rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted below-normal monsoon rainfall, prompting the government to implement several measures to mitigate the impact on agriculture. These include the deployment of enhanced micro-irrigation systems, the development and distribution of climate-resilient seed varieties, and the establishment of early-warning systems to keep farmers informed about changing weather conditions.
