As of April 26, 2026, the Highway 82 Fire in southeastern Georgia has expanded to over 31 square miles, destroying at least 87 homes and is only 7% contained. Located in Brantley County, about 35 miles north of the Florida border, the fire's rapid growth is due to strong winds and dry conditions. Another fire in Clinch and Echols counties has burned over 46 square miles, destroying 35 homes. Both fires are part of a larger outbreak of over 150 wildfires in Georgia and Florida, exacerbated by drought and climate conditions.
