Decline in moderate hurricanes, increase in extremes
Recent analysis of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has brought to light a concerning shift in the intensity of storms. There is a clear decline in the number of moderate hurricanes, classified as categories 1 to 3, and a corresponding increase in both weaker tropical storms and the more powerful hurricanes, categories 4 and 5. Data from the Insurance Journal indicates that the 2025 season was marked by eight tropical storms, one category 4 hurricane, and three category 5 hurricanes, with only a single moderate hurricane, Imelda, making up a mere 8% of the season's total storms.
