Michigan is currently struggling with significant dam safety issues as spring floods place considerable strain on its aging infrastructure. Despite earlier efforts by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and state lawmakers to allocate funds for dam safety, financial resources have decreased. A dam risk reduction grant program, which provided $44 million over three years, was not renewed, and the state's budget for dam safety has been significantly reduced. Many of Michigan's dams are decades old, with 15% of high-hazard dams reported to be in poor or unknown condition.
