The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) has cautioned about the potential consequences of an extended heat wave on New York's electric grid this summer. With reliability margins projected to be at historic lows, the risk of blackouts is heightened due to extreme weather and an aging power generation infrastructure. NYISO's summer reliability assessment anticipates 34,615 MW of power resources to meet a peak demand of 31,578 MW. However, after accounting for the required reserve of 2,620 MW, the reliability margin stands at a mere 417 MW under baseline conditions.
