Colorado Braces for Major May Snowstorm After Dry Season
US · Published May 4, 2026
Colorado is preparing for a significant late-season snowstorm expected to bring over two feet of snow to the Rocky Mountains this week.
This weather event is notable due to the region's recent snow drought and record high temperatures in March, which severely reduced the snowpack across much of the American West.
According to the National Weather Service in Boulder, this storm will be one of the largest in terms of liquid content for the year.

Why It's Important?

While snow in May is not uncommon in the Rockies, the current conditions underscore the importance of this storm. The snowfall is predicted to occur mainly on Tuesday and Wednesday, potentially extending as far as Denver, providing much-needed moisture to the drought-stricken area. The anticipated heavy snowfall is expected to greatly improve soil moisture levels, benefiting agriculture and diminishing the risk of wildfires as summer approaches. Furthermore, the increased snowpack will help elevate water levels in rivers and reservoirs, which is essential for the region's water supply.
