Hailstorms now surpass tornadoes in financial impact
Hailstorms are increasingly the main cause of severe storm losses in the United States, making up 50% to 80% of all severe convective storm (SCS) losses and now costing more than tornadoes. The U.S. is responsible for over 80% of global insured SCS losses, which shows how at risk the country is. Last year, losses from severe convective storms were over $60 billion, almost half of all natural catastrophe losses, which shows how much of an economic problem they are.
