New Mexico combats wildfire risk with restrictions
New Mexico has enacted stringent fire restrictions across the state to combat the heightened risk of wildfires during an unusually hot and dry spring. Effective April 6, 2026, the new regulations prohibit several activities known to spark fires, including smoking outside of enclosed areas, the use of fireworks, open campfires except in designated areas, prescribed agricultural burns, and flaring associated with oil and gas production on state-managed lands.
