Cold start marks 130th Boston Marathon
The 130th Boston Marathon started on Monday in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, led by Massachusetts National Guard members. The race began at 6 a.m. in cold conditions, with temperatures slightly above freezing and visible frost. Race Director Dave McGillivray mentioned it was the coldest start in his almost 40 years with the marathon. Participants like Staff Sgt. Mackenzie Smith and Spec. Benjamin De Boer were eager for their first marathon despite the chill. The cold required runners to wear extra layers, which would be discarded at the start. Conditions are expected to improve later in the day, becoming ideal for running.
