Midwest to Experience Warm-Up Following Early-Week Frost
US · Published May 12, 2026
The Midwest is set to experience a significant temperature rebound following early-week frost conditions.
According to meteorologist Chad Merrill, frost and freeze events began on May 11 across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, with hard freezes likely in northern regions.
Temperatures, which were 10–15°F below average, are expected to rise to 10°F above average by Friday, May 15, in Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri.

Why It's Important?

The frost earlier this week may have caused damage to fruit crops, particularly in northern areas of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. However, the warming trend will improve planting conditions across the Midwest. Farmers should remain cautious of scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially in western parts of Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota, where rainfall may increase starting May 17. The fast-moving weather systems are unlikely to cause flooding or standing water, but short-term disruptions to fieldwork may occur.
