USDA Reports Mixed Progress in Corn, Soybean, and Wheat Planting
US · Published May 12, 2026
The USDA's latest Crop Progress report, published on May 11, 2026, highlights mixed planting and crop conditions across the United States.
Corn planting has reached 57% completion in the top 18 corn-growing states, surpassing the five-year average of 52%.
Soybean planting is also ahead, with 49% of the crop planted compared to the five-year average of 36%.

Why It's Important?

The report indicates challenges for winter wheat growers, as crop conditions have deteriorated compared to last year. Poor and very poor ratings account for 40% of the winter wheat crop, which could impact yields and market prices. Spring wheat and oat growers face slower emergence rates, which may delay crop development. Corn and soybean growers are benefiting from favorable planting conditions, but localized issues such as cold temperatures in Michigan and North Dakota could hinder emergence. These mixed conditions highlight the variability in agricultural progress across different regions.
