Indian cities to face harsher and longer heatwaves due to global warming
IN · Published Nov 4, 2026
• A new study conducted by researchers from IIT Roorkee, IIT Jammu, and other institutions warns that major urban areas in India are likely to experience more intense and prolonged heatwaves as global temperatures rise.
• The study analysed climate projections for 54 major Indian cities using global climate models under warming scenarios of 1.5°C, 2°C, and 3°C above pre-industrial levels.

Impact & Risks

The study highlights significant risks to public health, urban infrastructure, and water resources due to the increasing intensity and duration of heatwaves. Cities in northwestern, northern, and eastern coastal regions of India are expected to face the most severe impacts. The probability of prolonged heatwaves, such as 6-day events, is projected to increase by several hundred per cent. This could exacerbate health issues, strain water supplies, and challenge urban infrastructure, particularly in densely populated areas.
