IMD warns of extremely heavy rain as Bay of Bengal system intensifies
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the formation of a low-pressure system over the east-central Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify into a deep depression. This system is forecast to move west-northwestwards, reaching the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal near the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts by the morning of 23 September
• The IMD predicts widespread rainfall across several states, including Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, and West Bengal, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also anticipated in certain regions during this period.
Impact & Risks
The expected heavy to extremely heavy rainfall could lead to localised flooding, waterlogging, and disruption of daily activities in affected areas. South Odisha and north Coastal Andhra Pradesh are particularly at risk of isolated extremely heavy rainfall on 23 and 24 September. Thunderstorms and gusty winds, reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph and gusting to 70 kmph, may impact Odisha and Telangana between 23 and 25 September. Coastal areas, including Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema, may experience strong surface winds during the forecast period, potentially affecting transportation and infrastructure.
