Heavy Rain Alert Issued as Depression Approaches Odisha Coast
• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Odisha starting from 23rd September
• A low-pressure system formed over the north Andaman Sea on 19th September is expected to intensify into a deep depression by 22nd September as it moves west-northwestwards over the Bay of Bengal. The system is likely to approach the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal near the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts by the morning of 23rd September. A yellow warning for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms is already in effect in some districts from 21st September. The IMD has advised fishermen to return from the sea by 21st September as a precautionary measure.

The anticipated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to impact several districts in Odisha, particularly in the coastal and southern regions, as well as parts of central Odisha. The rainfall could lead to waterlogging, disruption of daily activities, and potential damage to crops and infrastructure. Thunderstorm activity is also expected in some districts over the next two days, which could pose additional risks such as lightning strikes and strong winds. The Odisha government has alerted district collectors to prepare for potential impacts and ensure public safety.
