• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm named 'Murasu' and make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast on the morning of 3 November
• The cyclone is predicted to bring wind speeds of 80-90 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 100 kmph. This development follows closely on the heels of Cyclone Arnab, which recently impacted the region. Despite these back-to-back cyclonic events, the IMD forecasts below-normal rainfall for South Peninsular India in November, with precipitation expected to be under 77% of the long-period average. Strong El Niño conditions persist, while the Indian Ocean Dipole remains neutral.

Impact & Risks

Cyclone Murasu is expected to bring very heavy rainfall to Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on 2-3 November, with isolated areas experiencing extremely heavy downpours. Southern Odisha is also likely to receive heavy rainfall on 3-4 November. The IMD has issued warnings for fishermen, advising them to avoid venturing into the sea, particularly in the west-central, southeast, and parts of the central Bay of Bengal, which are expected to experience hazardous conditions. The strong winds and heavy rainfall could lead to localised flooding, damage to infrastructure, and disruption of daily life in the affected regions.
