Pineapple Express Brings Flood Threat to US Southwest Over Halloween Weekend
US · Published Oct 30, 2026
• An atmospheric river, known as the 'Pineapple Express,' is expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of the Desert Southwest and Southern California over the Halloween weekend.
• This weather system, fuelled by a southward jet stream and deep tropical moisture originating near Hawaii, is anticipated to deliver significant precipitation.

Impact & Risks

The saturated ground from last week's rainfall heightens the risk of flash flooding, particularly in northern Arizona, New Mexico, southern Colorado, and southern Utah. Areas of concern include the Phoenix metro's north and east sides, the Four Corners region, and San Diego County's foothills. Burn scars from recent wildfires are especially vulnerable to debris flows. Additionally, hikers in southern Utah, southern Colorado, and Arizona are advised to avoid slot canyons due to the potential for life-threatening flash floods. Over higher elevations, snowfall in the Sierra could create slippery travel conditions on mountain passes.
