IMD Issues Yellow Warning for Odisha Amid Brewing Low-Pressure Area in Bay of Bengal

• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 24-hour Yellow Warning for several districts in Odisha due to the formation of a new low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
• Lightning, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are expected in districts such as Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Sundargarh, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj until the morning of 12 October.

Impact & Risks

The brewing low-pressure system could lead to increased rainfall and thunderstorm activity across coastal Odisha around 14-15 October. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h may pose risks to outdoor activities and weak structures in affected districts. While no immediate warnings have been issued for fishermen along the Odisha-Andhra coast, the IMD is closely monitoring the system's movement and potential intensification into a depression. Residents in the warned districts should remain cautious of lightning and localised flooding due to rainfall.
